Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kratom and where does it come from?

Kratom, or Mitragyna speciosa, is a tropical evergreen tree, related to the coffee plant, that is native to Southeast Asia–Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, and Thailand. Kratom has been used in this region for centuries as an herbal supplement for its uplifting, calming, and pain-relieving properties.

Mitragynine, the alkaloid most abundant in the Kratom leaves, interacts with your body’s natural opioid receptors which can relate to feelings of pleasure and pain relief. It’s important to note that Kratom is not an opioid and can have various effects on different bodies. Historically, natives brewed Kratom into teas or chewed the leaves. Nowadays, Kratom commonly goes through an extraction process to create concentrate, or the leaves are micronized into a fine powder.

There are three main types of Kratom: Green, Red, and White. This comes from the color of the veins in the Kratom leaves at the time of harvest. Other types of Kratom–such as gold, yellow, or chocolate–refer to micronized blends or Kratom that has gone through additional processes such as fermentation. You will also find more specific strains, such as the popular Maeng Da. These strains are typically named after regions in Southeast Asia or by the shape of the leaf.
